Those who are caught speeding could face tougher penalties in the near future if the Minister for Transport Shane Ross has his way.

In what could be a major shake-up motorists could soon be set to face a ban if they are caught excessively speeding.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Radio One earlier this week Minister Ross revealed that he and his department are currently discussing proposals that will see the laws changed when it comes to speeding.

During the interview Mr Ross said that although there is great efforts being made to punish those found guilty of drink driving, more must be done to tackle the second biggest killer on the nations roads which is speed.

Mr Ross said he fully believes those who are caught speeding excessively should receive the adequate punishment.

Under the new proposals those found guilty of such an offence could receive more penalty points and even a lengthy ban.
