Tourists may face a hefty fine for sitting down in ‘undesignated spots’ in Venice

Tourists in Venice may soon fall foul of regulations being proposed to fine those sitting on ‘undesignated spots’ around the city.

Venice has struggled with tourist numbers for some time, forcing local authorities to enforce a raft of deeply unpopular rules such as no pausing on bridges, or feeding birds around the streets.

The new regulations about sitting in illegal places will be voted on next month. If passed, it could mean an automatic €500 fine for the unwary.
