With just a number of weeks to go to one of the biggest festivals in the country this year, the Fleadh Cheoil, residents in the town of Drogheda Co. Louth is reeling today after a suspected arson attack has left one of its most beautiful and scenic features in ruins.
The Boyne River boardwalk was a major project which took a number of years to complete running from the ramparts area of Drogheda right out to Oldbridge house in Tullyallen.
Locals are claiming that the fire was a result of arson as the material used on the boardwalk was extremely durable and had anti-flammable materials built in.
It’s understood that the boardwalk cost hundreds of thousands of euro to implement and it was made all more costly as the fire occurred on the most scenic part, about 300 feet long along the sea lock just past the Boyne Valley hanging bridge.
Councillor Kevin Callan told The Liberal that he’s going to try and get Meath County Council to to see if the section can be repaired by August even if temporarily
He said:
“If someone knows who did this to our area I’m saying do the right thing, ring Drogheda Gardai on 041-9838777 and tell the Gardai what you know.”
