Varadkar remains calm ahead of leadership contest results – saying “I have complete faith in my colleagues”

In just over 24 hours the Irish people will know who their new leader is, and as always the leading contender for the position Leo Varadkar has remained as calm as ever saying he has complete faith in his colleagues.

Mr Varadkar who has the overall support of the majority of experienced Fine Gael leaders said he believes he will retain the support of his colleagues despite what his rival Simon Coveney said in the past two weeks.

Speaking this evening, the Social Protection Minister said: “So far one thing that I can absolutely say about this contest is that nobody has let me down.”

“Anyone who said that they would support me did, anyone who said that they would do so publicly has, so I have faith in my colleagues.”

He added: “I don’t have any reason to think that, given that fact that they’ve been totally honest with me all along, that that would change and I have no reason to think that is going to change tomorrow.”
