“We want Micheal Martin out” – Major backlash for Martin over his support for abortion as petition launches from Fianna Fail members seeking his resignation

The leader (for now) of Fianna Fail Micheal Martin has come under immense pressure over the weekend from his one-time party faithful over his support for abortion.

Martin announced his support for abortion to the Dail last Thursday evening. The Cork TD had always been the nearly-man until both Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowan retired.

The Fianna Fail Ard Fheis voted overwhelmingly to retain the Eighth Amendment in the Constitution – the amendment that gives an equal right to life to the unborn baby in its mother’s womb.

Martin was right up there at the helm when the economic disaster happened in September 2008 – many, many Irish people still attain much of the recession to him and his colleagues at that time.

One hard-line Fianna Fail member told The Liberal on Sunday evening:
“I never really liked Micheal because I think he was atrocious as the Minister for Health and only made matters much worse. During his tenure in the Department, the country was awash with money and all we got from his poor efforts were more waiting lists, less beds, botched operations and monstrous death. He was never my choice for leader of the our party but he really shot himself in the foot coming out in favour of abortion like he did. He’s a disgrace to ‘Dev’ and even more recent party leaders. I know for a fact the parliamentary party are very much against what he did last week and he will find that out very soon. We want Micheal Martin out!”

A petition seeking the resignation of Micheal Martin has been set up. If you wish to add your name to the petition , you can do so by clicking here for the petition.
