World’s oldest person dies aged 116

The oldest known person in the world has died in New York aged 116.

Susannah Mushatt Jones, who claimed her longevity was due to sleep, clean living and positive energy, died at 8:26 p.m. Thursday after being ill and in and out of the hospital for 10 days.

Jones, born in Alabama, lived in three centuries during her lifetime. She also lived through two world wars and 20 US presidencies.

She was one of 11 children in her family.

Following her death, the presumptive oldest person in the world is Emma Morano of Italy, who was born on November 29, 1899. The oldest man is Israel Kristal of Israel, who is 112.
