?BREAKING: School closure updates as emergency meetings to be held again this morning over severe freezing weather conditions

The National Emergency Coordination Group met Sunday as frost threatens to wreak havoc for another week.

Met Eireann departments, heads of local authorities and meteorologists are considering implementing an action plan for the duration of the cold spell.

More weather warnings have been issued, including an orange state alert for the entire country.

After the meeting, it was confirmed that schools across Ireland are to “remain open as usual”.

The public is urged to be vigilant and prepare for inclement weather.

Darragh O’Brien, Secretary of State for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, said: “We will continue to monitor the ongoing weather conditions and ensure that all arms of the state are responding speedily and appropriately to meet any challenges. I would advise everybody to monitor national and local media, including social media, over the coming days to keep up to date with information regarding the developing weather situation. Above all, make sure you stay warm and safe and keep in touch with vulnerable or elderly neighbours,” reports The Mirror.

Schools that remain open was one of the key messages after the meeting. Others include:

– The public transport system continues to function normally. The public is advised to check transport providers’ websites and social media channels for updates.
– Local authorities have activated their own winter service plans. Severe weather assessment teams are monitoring the situation and coordinating an appropriate response. Widespread application continues, as does plowing where required.
– Local authority awareness teams continue to engage with sleepers and encourage them to take advantage of indoor accommodation. Beds are available in Dublin and other city centers for anyone who needs them. Anyone needing accommodation will be catered for.

In addition, the following public notice was issued:

– Driving conditions are dangerous with black ice, freezing temperatures and freezing fog. Slow down and be aware of other road users, allow more time and drive carefully.
– Take extra care when walking: sidewalks etc. They can be extremely dangerous / slippery due to the ice.
– Look for vulnerable and isolated neighbors.
– Keep your phone charged and take it with you on all trips. In an emergency, dial 999
