?BREAKING: Some schools may now close due to severe freezing weather

Schools assume the country had appeared  set to remain open amid low temperatures and widespread freezing fog.

It is understood that the National Emergency Co-ordination Group met on Sunday to discuss the situation, and that one of the outcomes of the meeting was that essential services and facilities such as public transport and schools will continue as normal.

Ireland is in the grip of the first cold snap of the winter, with temperatures as low as -10C expected in places over the coming days.

However, that strategy is now only in place for general advice.

Principals and Vice Principals have the authority to decide whether their school remains open or not.

They’re going to make the decision on a localised basis only, depending on road conditions, heating facilities, low temperatures and access to the school.

Parents are asked to check with their school for updates.
