Ireland won three gold medals on the final day of the European Women’s Boxing Championships in Montenegro.
Kellie Harrington, Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke took top honors on a brilliant day for Irish boxing that also saw Caitlin Fryers and Christina Desmond claim silver medals.
Harrington easily won gold after beating Lenka Bernardova 5-0 in the final.
The first round was a rudimentary and tentative affair with very little to offer from the Czech fighter. Harrington took advantage of them and landed some straight right hands, and that was enough to clinch a 10-9 lead on all five scorecards.
Harrington picked up the pace early in the second round, a stiff left hand drawing attention, but Bernardova was happy to sit back down.
The Czech fighter stepped up at the last minute and threw some nice combos, but Harrington handled them effortlessly and led 20-18 on all scorecards.
It was a comfortable final for the Dubliner as she added another gold medal to her massive medal tally.
The southpaw from Dundalk, Broadhurst battled to win the gold medal in the welterweight final against Ukraine’s Mariia Bova.
The 2022 World and Commonwealth champion dominated the action, forcing her opponent to count on a nasty left to first position. She finished the round 10-9 on three maps and 10-8 on two more.
