A rally which took place in the city today gathered huge support. 12,000 Irish people gathered in solidarity along the River Liffey to show their support for Syrian refugees.

Uplift Ireland organised the rally and released these figures. They claim that over 12,000 people have pledged their homes to asylum seekers.

The campaign is aiming to gain the attention of Enda Kenny as they want the government to do more to aid the refugee crisis. Today’s rally hoped to raise awareness of the current horrific situation .

The meeting point for the assembly was the Dublin Famine memorial at Custom House Quay, to serve as a reminder of Ireland’s refugee past.

Uplift Ireland’s website says of this campaign, “We’re witnessing the worst humanitarian crisis since the second world war. The scale of the human tragedy is truly shocking.”

LGBT spokesperson Panti Bliss was in attendance and took to Twitter to say “Good turnout for the “Day of Action, Refugee Crisis” at the Famine Memorial.”
