A man has been charged in connection with a hit and run in County Donegal last weekend that killed a nine-year-old boy, reports RTE.

Sergi Kelly, 23, of Upper Mullaghmore, Cliffoney, Co. Sligo, appeared at Carrick-on-Shannon District Court.

Detective Garda Shane Maye of Ballyshannon Garda Station gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court he accosted Mr Kelly at Ballyshannon station at 7.15pm last night, reports RTE.

The defendant faces a number of charges under the Road Traffic Act in connection with the crash on Atlantic Way, Bundoran, on Saturday evening, which killed Ronan Wilson, of Kildress, Co Tyrone.

The boy was hit by a car while going for a walk in the city.

Mr Kelly is charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident, failure to remain at the scene and failure to render or receive aid, reports RTE.

He was released on bail with an additional independent surety of EUR 5,000 after depositing EUR 2,000 to the court.

He must report to Bolissanon garda station three times a week, have no contact with prosecution witnesses – directly or indirectly, through social media or otherwise – and surrender his passport.

On October 20, Mr Kelly was summoned to appear at Ballyshannon District Court.
