
After a mother of two was discovered in a burning Cork flat with what appeared to be stab wounds, a man has been detained on murderous suspicions, reports The Mirror.
Emergency personnel found the body, identified locally as 27-year-old Daena Walsh, in an apartment at John Barry House in Midleton, Cork, yesterday afternoon.
When paramedics and gardai arrived on the scene. They informed the fire department after seeing that another area of the structure was on fire.
Paramedics tried in vain to save Ms. Walsh’s life, but she was declared dead at the site, reports The Mirror.
The deceased knew the 29-year-old man who was detained by the Gardai, and last night at the Midleton Garda Station, investigators were questioning him in accordance with Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He may be detained for a full day.
When gardai learnt that there had been an incident at the property on Friday, just after 4:15 p.m., the alarm was triggered, reports The Mirror.
Ms Walsh was discovered seriously injured in the flat. It is acknowledged that the injuries she sustained were consistent with being stabbed.
Dr. Yvonne McCarthy of the Office of the State Pathologist will now conduct a postmortem examination at Cork University Hospital in order to determine the precise cause of death.
According to Sinn Féin TD Pat Buckley, who represents Midleton, the woman’s death shook the community, reports The Mirror.
