Record number of Gardai injured while on duty last year, new figures claim

According to recent statistics, 459 Gardai sustained injuries while doing their duties in 2018, reports The Mirror.

Since statistics have been kept, this was the largest rise in the number of violent attacks on force members.

During the unprovoked attacks during the November riots in Dublin, several people were injured.

Over 3,000 Gardai have been beaten and wounded while performing their duties over the last ten years, according to Justice Minister Helen McEntee, reports The Mirror.

She also verified that, prior to the unrest in Coolock more than a week ago, 159 cops had been hurt this year.

The Aontu leader and Meath TD, Peadar Toibin, submitted a written parliamentary question to which the Minister was replying.

She said: “We are all grateful to our Gardai for their outstanding dedication and commitment to serving the public and for the important role they play in society. For the most part the relationship between the Gardai and the public is one built on very significant trust. We only have to look at the fact that An Garda Siochana is a largely unarmed and yet hugely effective community police force,” reports The Mirror.
