30-yr-old nurse arrested in relation to the death of eight babies

A nurse was charged with eight murders and ten attempted murders related to a baby deaths investigation. 30-yr-old Lucy Letby was arrested again on Tuesday, three years after an investigation into infant deaths and non-fatal breakdowns began in the neonatal department of the Countess of Chester Hospital. She was first arrested by Cheshire police in 2018 after an increase in deaths reportedly rocketed 10% above the hospital average.

According to the Metro, a statement by Cheshire Police released today said: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Cheshire Police to charge a healthcare professional with murder in connection with an ongoing investigation into a number of baby deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

‘Lucy Letby, of Hereford, is facing eight charges of murder and 10 charges of attempted murder. The charges relate to the period of June 2015 to June 2016. ‘The 30-year-old was re-arrested on Tuesday, November 10, and has since subsequently been charged.’

Letby was arrested for the first time in July 2018 on suspicion of killing eight babies and attempting to kill six. The medical professional was released on bail for further investigation and was arrested again a year later for the same investigation and in connection with three other alleged murder attempts. Her home in the Blacon neighborhood of Chester was raided by police following her previous arrests.

The nurse told Chester and District Standard in a 2013 interview that she was caring for babies who needed different levels of support. She worked in the department as a nursing student for three years before qualifying as a pediatric nurse at the University of Chester in 2011. Letby is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in Warrington Magistrates Court on Thursday, November 12.
