500 complaints submitted by vegans to ban advertisement promoting meat as part of a “balanced diet”

Advertisements sponsored by Britain’s Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) have created quite a stir amongst the plant-eating vegan community.

More than 500 people complained about the AHDB £1.5 million campaign that pushed eating meat and dairy products as part of a ‘varied and balanced diet alongside a healthy lifestyle’ reports the Metro. One advert outlined “Beef, pork, lamb and milk contain vitamin B12, an essential nutrient not naturally present in the vegan diet”.

Vegans got organised and submitted 500 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK accusing the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board’s adverts of suggesting meat and dairy is crucial in order to secure a healthy diet.

A spokesman for The Vegan Society said the group was “disheartened and frustrated” after none of the vegan complaints were upheld by The Advertising Standards Authority.
