A new report by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) highlights they received 1955 complaints involving 3089 allegations against serving gardai in 2020.
A total of 572 new criminal investigations into gardai conduct were opened in 2020.
One of the more public investigations involved the shooting dead of George Nkencho after an alleged knife assault in a spar shop that ended with a fatal confrontation with the armed response unit.
According to the Sun, a GSOC spokesperson said “”The death (of Nkencho) was referred by the Garda Síochána to GSOC in accordance with section 102 of the Act, and a GSOC investigation into the circumstances of the shooting was immediately commenced.”
No further details on the investigation were released.
