A 6-year-old boy who allegedly shot his teacher and seriously injured her in the US will not be charged with the crime.
According to RTE, a prosecutor in Virginia has made the decision, with Newport News Commonwealth attorney Howard Gwynn explaining to NBC News that the “prospect that a six-year-old can stand trial is problematic”.
As the investigation is still ongoing, it is not yet clear what will happen but it is thought that the boy’s mother could face charges. Buying a pistol is legal in the US but she could have legal difficulties if she is found to have failed to keep the weapon secure in her home.
It is also reported by RTE that the school district’s superintendent has been fired as it emerged that school officials had been told several times that the boy had a gun on the school grounds. Despite carrying out a search, there were not able to find any weapons.
