A psychiatric nurse has been jailed for 12 and a half years for raping his wife three times and what the judge described as a systematic pattern of repeated sexual assaults on his daughter, resulting in unquantified damages, reports RTE.

The sentencing judge at the Central Criminal Court paid tribute to both victims, saying they were both truly wonderful women, for whom Irish society was grateful.

Martin Doyle, 53, from Asker, Knock, County Mayo, was convicted by a jury of three counts of raping his wife, Olivia Tuite, in May 2009 and November 2011.

He was also convicted of 24 counts of sexually assaulting his daughter, Siobhan Moore, between 2004 and 2011, when she was between the ages of seven and 15.

Judge Carolyn Biggs said the sexual assault cases against his daughter represented a pattern of crimes, as Doyle had sexually assaulted Ms Moore in the shower two or three times a week.

The court heard that the sexual assaults took place at a lake near the family home, as well as at the boy’s aunt’s house, and while she and her father were camping.

Doyle raped his wife at the family home the night before he was to leave for the UK for his mother’s funeral. The third rape crime took place in May 2011, also at the family home.

Doyle does not accept the jury’s verdict. Both women have waived their anonymity to allow their names to be kept.

In a Victim Impact statement, Ms Tuite told the court she did not want anyone to touch her and even her children after the 2009 rape. She said she was ashamed and angry that she didn’t stop her husband.

Doyle has denied all allegations and continues to deny them. The court heard that he has been suffering from mental health issues since 2011 and has no previous convictions, reports RTE.

Judge Biggs said that in both cases, Doyle was guilty of betraying the trust of his wife and daughter and violating the sanctity of their home.

In his probation report, one assessment found he was at low risk of re-offending, but another rated the risk moderate.

The judge said the offense shows a “systematic pattern of sexual interference with a young child by a person in a position to have total control over her”, reports RTE.

Judge Biggs said rape fell in the most serious category of such offenses and noted the humiliation and humiliation of Ms Tuite.

She sentenced him to a total of 12.5 years in prison.

Addressing Ms Tuite and Ms Moore, the judge told them they had said they were vulnerable, but “nothing could be further from the truth”, reports RTE.

But for them, she said sex offenders like Martin Doyle cannot be brought to justice.

They were both magnificent, the judge said, reports RTE.
