9/11 Tribute Museum closes in New York as it fails to recover from losses caused by pandemic

In news that will disappoint many, a 9/11 museum in New York is closing permanently after failing to recover financially after the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Metro, the 9/11 Tribute museum is located a few blocks away from Ground Zero and has been described as providing “person-to-person history”, involving guided tours with family members and survivors of the attack.

It was said that the museum, which relied heavily on attendance for funding, saw a drop in visitors from 150,000 in 2019 to just 26,000 last year.  While it intends to continue to maintain an online presence, many people are devastated that it will no longer be available to act as a physical space for survivors to tell their stories.   A larger museum will remain open at Ground Zero but the loss of the 9/11 Tribute Museum is thought to be particularly sad as the country approaches the 21st anniversary of the shocking day when thousands of people lost their lives.

A petition has been started, appealing for help to keep the museum open.
