A businessman was forced to remove an ad and van from the company website when complaints were made to the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland (ASAI)

According to the Irish Mirror, the van was advertising Pat Lambe’s Clotheslines company, showing a picture of a model on the van, hanging up washing on a clothes line wearing underwear and a short shirt.

Complaints about the ad led the ASAI to deem the ad “sexist” and the owner of the company, Pat Lambe, was forced to take the ad and van down from the website.  He was able to keep the image on his van however, as the ASAI don’t cover advertising on vans.

Pat took part in RTE’s Liveline programme to tell Joe Duffy about the situation.  He said that the woman in the ad was just hanging clothes up on a clothes line, pointing out that she was fully clothed and not naked. He also said that it was just “a bit of craic and a bit of a laugh.”

But not everyone was happy with his explanation, with one caller said to be infuriated that Mr. Lambe was given time on the show to talk about his business and the ad, while others expressed the view that he was entitled to keep the ad in place.
