Burning EU flag and mocking EU anthem to be criminalised in Germany

Burning the EU flag could land you in prison for up to three years in Germany soon as the state of Saxony is set to pass a law criminalising damaging the flag of the Bureaucrat run supranational union.

Legislators in the state of Saxony may be setting a trend as they move to criminalise any action with the EU’s 12-star flag that leaves it “removed, destroyed, damaged, unusable or unrecognisable”.

The anthem of the EU, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, is also set to get similar protections which would see those who parody, mock or silence it also facing potential jail time.

The Orwellian measurements follow laws already in place in Germany where the national flag, as well as state flags, cannot be destroyed in public and offender can face up to three years prison time.

Legislators have said the draconian laws are necessary to “to take firm and effective action against those whose aim is to disparage the fundamental values of the European Union”.

Being critical of the EU or its unelected, unaccountable, and for the most part unknown, leadership is being increasingly condemned as a thought crime and greater legal suppression of these views is likely in the coming years.
