The Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan said it was too early to offer any advice to those wishing to return to Ireland for Christmas.
Speaking to the Oireachtas Transportation Committee, he said that the national public health emergency team must ensure that the country is not put at risk by deals that could lead to the import of diseases in December.
Dr. Holohan said that international travel will be a significant risk since Covid-19 is under national control.
Regarding the trip home for Christmas, he said that NPHET is currently unable to provide counselling due to currently unknown factors.
He told the committee that once the virus is back under control in Ireland, import risks will need to be managed carefully.
