Higgins demands people give much greater consideration to the welfare of the Traveller Community

President Michael D. Higgins called for people to have a much greater focus and shared commitment to address various issues affecting travellers’ lives and well-being.

Opening a series of Traveller Ethnicity Day events at NUI Galway, Higgins said that while work has been done to recognise and value traditions and cultural travellers, more is needed to ensure full participation and equality.

The President said it was important to acknowledge travellers which Ireland as a country had not been good at.

According to RTE, Higgins spoke about “a failure of State policy” and said a “capitulation to exclusionary, property-based, and most unrepublican populist policies” were indictments of Irish society.
