Tánaiste Michael Martin has said he supports public naming of people who don’t pay their taxes.
Revenue is currently reviewing a major EU ruling that ruled last month that Hungarian tax authorities had breached the confidentiality of a businessman whose name and home address were on a list of tax evaders, reports Independent.
The Sunday Business Post reported today that Treasury Secretary Michael McGrath had told Sinn Fein that the Treasury was considering the implications of the case.
The Government is expected to review the EU ruling on the matter and whether it means changes to Irish law are required.
“There are many penalties for non-compliance, and one of those is the public naming of people who do not pay their tax and I support that. But also, of course, the biggest penalty is the interest and financial penalties that go with breaching of tax regulations, that’s fundamentally where it gets the hardest,” Mr Martin said today, reports Independent.
The Commissioner of Revenue publishes a list of defaulters every three months to prevent people from not paying their taxes in full.
Tánaiste said the EU decision would be analyzed and the Irish government would be “full read out on that and its implications,” reports Independent.
The delinquent list is one of the most powerful revenue tools to convince people to pay taxes in full.
