Govt says less than100 asylum seekers are left without accommodation for first time since February

The number of asylum seekers who recently arrived without state accommodation has fallen below 100 for the first time since February.

The latest figures from the Ministry of Integration show that 74 adult asylum seekers have recently arrived and the state has not provided any accommodation, reports RTE.

In the last 24 hours, 100 people who had no accommodation were offered a place, the day before 50 people were offered a place.

No accommodation was offered to the approximately 14 newcomers who arrived today.

Since January 24, 1,301 asylum seekers who were initially told no accommodation was available have been offered a place, reports RTE.

Last month, the number of asylum seekers without state housing peaked when, as of the evening of May 3, a total of 593 were without housing.

Assistant Secretary-General Carol Baxter told an Oireachtas committee that community response to new shelters is one of the key factors in determining how many places can be made available and how quickly that can happen.

Ms Baxter acknowledged that the State has “a legal and moral obligation to access the claims of those who seek refuge and to provide accommodation and supports in line with the (European Union) Reception Conditions Directive,” reports RTE.
