An Afriqiyah Airways plane with 118 passengers was hijacked over Libya and forced to land in Malta at 1:30pm Irish time today.
The flight was diverted to the Mediterranean island this morning.
Two passengers on board the Afriqiyah Airways plane threatened to blow it up and kill all 188 passengers and crew on board.
Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat said he had been informed of a “potential hijack”.
Taking to Twitter he said: “Informed of potential hijack situation of a #Libya internal flight diverted to #Malta. Security and emergency operations standing by.”
However, at 3:30pm Irish time, they hijackers surrendered and have been arrested and taken into police custody in Malta. Both passengers and crew are said to be unharmed in the traumatic ordeal.
