President Higgins back in the Aras after spending two nights in hospital

President Michael D Higgins was in hospital for two nights to receive treatment for an infection.

The president was being treated at St James’s Hospital in Dublin, where he was undergoing a course of antibiotics for a localised infection, reports RTE.

A spokesperson said yesterday that President Higgins’s condition had improved, but that he would remain in hospital to complete his treatment.

The spokesperson added that the president was “in good spirits and feeling well,” reports RTE.

President Higgins was admitted to the hospital on Sunday as a planned visit and has stayed overnight for the past two nights.

Last year, he also spent several days at St James’s Hospital as a precautionary measure to keep his blood pressure under observation, reports RTE.

At that time, President Higgins expressed gratitude to the public for the “outpouring” of support he had received, reports RTE.

He later disclosed that he had experienced a mild stroke.

President Higgins will continue in office at Áras an Uachtaráin until Catherine Connolly is inaugurated at Dublin Castle on 11 November, reports RTE.

He has since returned to the Aras tonight and is said to be in good spirits.
