The Leaving Certificate syllabus is set to see a new but an old subject in the coming months ahead as the Government are planning to make Physical Exercise mandatory for all those under the age of 18 in order to tackle obesity.

The proposed idea of adding PE to the Leaving Cert is outlined in the newly formed Government’s programme released this week, according to reports a number of Government ministers are to “support the introduction of a new Leaving Certificate PE syllabus, as a full optional subject”.

It is believed that the Government are firmly behind the idea as they are looking to tackle the nations obesity problem after latest statistics showed that Ireland has the third highest rate of obesity in the EU.

The news has also received the full backing of a number of thee country’s top Physicians told who say urgent action is needed to tackle the current obesity problem which is driving Ireland’s disease’ epidemic.

Although some students can breathe a sigh of relief as there is currently no exact date for when PE will be made a Leaving Cert subject.
