A return to old ways: Harris says HSE cannot operate in its current form as he re-introduces regional health areas

The Minister for Health Simon Harris has said that the HSE’s current format cannot continue to operate in its current form.

Upon announcing his new Sláintecare plan, the Minister for Health said the HSE’s current format should have never been established as it is not fit for purpose.

Under the proposals the country will be introduced to a system which is similar to that of the one which was in operation before the formation of the HSE.

Harris who claims the new system is built for the future, revealed that the country will have six regional healthcare areas with their own budgets that will be determined on population size.

Although further plans for the system have yet to be ironed out, the Health Minister fully believes that the new system will last as key decisions will be made at local level.

He added that the new system will give clearer financial and performance based accountability as well as assisting with front line staff.
