A young woman in her early 20s was attacked and killed today in Tullamore, County Offaly.

According to RTE, Gardai have launched a murder investigation after the body of the woman was found along the canal bank in Tullamore, County Offaly.  It is understood that the woman was a local.  She was thought to be exercising along the Canal between Boland’s Lock and Digby Bridge, Cappincur when the fatal attack took place.

A man in his 40s has been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.   He is being detained at the Garda Station in Tullamore under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act where he can be questioned for up to 24 hours.  The State pathologist will carry out an examination in order to determine the cause of the woman’s death.
