A&E doctor who squeezed a patient’s breast gets suspended for 8 months despite allegations he is an ongoing risk to patients

An accident and emergency doctor working at Guy’s Hospital in Southwark, central London has been suspended from practicing for 8 months by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service this week.

Dr Abul Murshid, 50, from Wilmslow in Cheshire, was found guilty of various misconduct charges at a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, but was cleared of sexually motivated behaviour.

A female patient attended Guy’s Hospital in March 2019 for a scan but Dr Murshid asked the patient to expose her chest area so that he could carry out an examination.

In her statement the patient said “I can’t remember exactly what he said and how he said it but I remember quite clearly that he did not offer me a chaperone which I would have expected considering this was an examination of a private part of the body.

I was wearing a sports top at the time so I pulled this above my breasts to expose them so that Dr Murshid could examine my chest.’ She added he then squeezed her nipple ‘out of nowhere’ which she found ‘so uncomfortable” reports the Metro.

In calling for Murshid to be struck off, GMC counsel Peter Atherton said: ‘Dr Murshid has a propensity for distorted thinking, which is unlikely to be remediable and is such that he presents a risk to patients.

However the tribunal was satisfied the doctor had insight and “does not pose a significant risk of repeating behaviour.”
