After much social media uproar, Japan denies their ultra fit Olympic athletes with minimal risk of serious illness or death will jump coronavirus queue ahead of the elderly

Whilst the Irish community are subjected to news of private school teachers and at least one private health boss jumping vaccine queues, there has been widespread protests in Japan when it emerged that Olympic athletes were queue jumping.

Japan has an ageing population and many rightly think the elderly in Japan should get the vaccine before ultra fit athletes whose risk of serious or life threatening infection is minimal.

According to RT, in response to the social media backlash, chief cabinet secretary Katsunobu Kato has now denied that his government had plans to prioritise Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

But Kyodo, a news agency in Japan claimed to have spoken to officials who revealed the possibility of guaranteeing Japan’s competitors being fully vaccinated by the 23 July opening ceremony of the Games was being explored. That would have meant the elderly would still be eating for their vaccines whilst the ultra-fit athletes would have jumped the queue.
