In a horrifying turn of events on Sunday, Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-yr-old Iraq War veteran from Burton, Michigan, unleashed chaos on a peaceful worship service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township. What began as a routine morning gathering for hundreds of congregants devolved into a nightmare around 10:30 a.m., when Sanford rammed his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck through the church’s front doors, shattering glass and scattering worshippers.
Eyewitnesses described pandemonium as Sanford exited the vehicle, armed with an assault rifle, and opened fire indiscriminately, striking at least two victims fatally. In a calculated act of destruction, he doused the interior with gasoline and ignited a blaze that rapidly engulfed the building, trapping others inside amid thick smoke and flames. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours, with plumes visible miles away, while police swarmed the scene.
As Sanford attempted to flee in his truck—bearing an Iraq War license plate—responding officers from the Grand Blanc Township Police and Michigan Department of Natural Resources engaged him in a fierce gun battle in the parking lot. He was killed on the spot, preventing further carnage. The toll sea at least four dead, including two from gunshot wounds and two more discovered amid the ruins, plus eight injured, some critically.
Sanford, a former U.S. Marine sergeant who served from 2004 to 2008, graduated from Goodrich High School and was remembered by locals as an unassuming outdoorsman and family man, married with a young son. No motive has been released, though authorities are probing potential improvised explosive devices found on-site and his military history for clues. The FBI classifies it as targeted violence, echoing recent attacks on faith communities.
This brazen assault has left the tight-knit Mormon congregation reeling, with leaders urging unity amid grief. As investigations deepen, questions swirl about radicalisation and veteran support, casting a somber shadow over Michigan’s heartland.
