The Vatican says that the Pope is not suffering considerably more, is in critical condition and is receiving blood transfusions, with prayers being said for the Pontiff.

The Vatican has shared new details regarding Pope Francis’ condition as the 88-year-old pontiff remains hospitalized in Rome. Admitted earlier this week to Gemelli University Hospital for what was initially described as a “precautionary check-up” due to flu-like symptoms, the Pope underwent further medical evaluations on Friday.

According to a Vatican spokesperson, Pope Francis is receiving treatment for a mild respiratory infection. “His Holiness is responding well to the therapy, and his condition is stable,” the statement read, adding that he continues to be monitored by medical staff. The update follows reports that the Pope had a slight fever and underwent a CT scan as part of diagnostic efforts.

Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis has continued some of his duties remotely. The Vatican confirmed he held a virtual audience with a group of pilgrims on Friday morning, though his usual public engagements, including the Sunday Angelus blessing, have been postponed. Sources close to the Holy See say the Pope remains in good spirits, even humorously remarking to staff about his “unexpected retreat.”

This is not the first time Pope Francis has faced health challenges. In recent years, he has dealt with respiratory issues and underwent abdominal surgery in 2023. His current hospital stay has renewed concerns among the faithful about his wellbeing, given his age and demanding schedule.

The Vatican has not provided a specific timeline for his discharge, stating only that it depends on his recovery progress. For now, the global Catholic community continues to pray for the Pope’s swift return to full health.
