A large group of Anti-water charges campaigners have taken to the streets of Limerick City this afternoon to burnwater bills as part of demonstration against the charges.

The group who have named themselves ‘We Wont Pay’ campaign have held a bonfire outside City Hall and have invited anyone who is opposed to the charges to show up with their water bill so it can be burned. The protest is being held after the Government made announcement this week that they are set to introduce new amendments to the legislation which would see landlords having to pay water charges if a tenant decides to leave the property before paying the outstanding charges. It is also believed that the government are going to make amendments that will also see unpaid charges being deducted from wages or social welfare payments.

The head of the protest Councillor Cian Prendiville from the Anti-Austerity Alliance has said the bonfire will be Limerick’s biggest.
Mr Prendiville said: “We’re hoping for hundreds of people to come down and that’s what we mean by the biggest bonfire,” he said. “We’re going to have carnival games there, we’re going to have where they can bin the austerity parties, throwing their logos into the bins, there’s ice-cream, there’ll be a family fun day as well as a political protest by burning the bills and sending a strong message to Irish Water that we won’t be bullied and we won’t pay.”
