The Minister for Health Simon Harris signed into law last night new powers that allow An Gardai to arrest people, detain them, fine them and even see them thrown into the slammer for up to 6 months for breaching coronavirus lockdown measures.

Breaches include going further than 2km from their home to do exercise.

They also include going to any shop that doesn’t include essential shopping such as supermarkets or pharmacies.

Anyone who’s just going out for a drive or going to the park for a run is literally now risking a fine of up to €2,500 or up to 24 weeks in prison as a result.
