Apologies could begin to change hearts and minds over Irish unity, claims former Taoiseach Varadkar

Leo Varadkar has stated that expressing sincere regret for the State’s and the IRA’s past treatment of non-Catholics might contribute to “changing hearts and minds” on unity, reports Breaking News.

The State was “sectarian in character” during its early years, the former Taoiseach remarked, and this had to be acknowledged.

Additionally, he stated that he thought the next Irish government need to think about creating a fund to make ready for the financial difficulties that come with Irish unification utilising its budget surplus, reports Breaking News.

On Saturday, Mr. Varadkar gave a speech at the Ireland’s Future gathering in Belfast.

Even if he was no longer employed by the government, he told the audience, he still wanted to promote unification.

Mr Varadkar said: “I think it is really important that the belief in unification isn’t seen to be the preserve of any one particular party or one or two parties, it needs to be all parties and no party. I think one of the most important things that we need to do is to make sure we maximise support for that and reach out to people who may be unenthusiastic about it south of the border and those who aren’t convinced or don’t support it yet here north of the border,” reports Breaking News.
