Heavy rains over the past 48 hours have caused waterways in certain areas of the country to swell up, prompting fresh fears of further flooding.
In Athlone, for example, water levels have risen by 8cm since Wednesday, and it is predicted that they may rise up to 10cm.
Communities along the Shannon basin are now on high alert, as the short term outlook is for further rain over the next few days.
