Arlene Foster says EU must stop using Northern Ireland as “bargaining chip” as Johnson’s bill passes first hurdle

Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister, Arlene Foster, has said that the EU is treating the six counties as its “plaything”.

The First Minister has said that she hopes to avoid any kind of border checks between the North and the Republic just as much as she intends to protect the integrity of the UK but said that Brussels must cease to use Northern Ireland as a bargaining chip.

These remarks came ahead of a debate in Westminster over Boris Johnson’s proposed bill that would override a part of the already agreed Brexit deal relating to Norther Ireland.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is pushing this new bill into law as under the current Brexit agreement Northern Ireland would effectively remain part of the single market for goods but as the EU has not guaranteed the UK “third country” status the bloc can then effectively blockade goods from entering Northern Ireland.

This was the claim laid by the UK’s chief Brexit negotiator, Lord Frost, which has predictably been dismissed by senior EU figures.

Boris Johnson’s bill, which has been condemned by the EU and some British politicians as a breach of international law, passed its first stage on the way to becoming law and the path to a much dreaded no-deal Brexit is now set.
