As RTE, the government news agency focusses on trivial “MerrionGate”, Charlie Flanagan seeks background briefing documents from Simon Coveney’s office on appointment of Zappone.

Deputy Charlie Flanagan,  chair of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs committee and former Minister for Justice has requested that “the Zappone issue” should be discussed at the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs committee as soon as possible. According to the Irish Times,  it is expected that a meeting will not be called before September as members and committee staff are unavailable at different times during August.

Deputy Flanagan has sought extra information on the Zappone appointment from Minister Simon Coveney, a member of Fine Gael and Minister at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“I have sought background briefing documents from the Department of Foreign Affairs on receipt of which I will circulate to members to inform the debate” says Charlie Flanagan.

These briefing documents will shed more light on how Simon Coveney’s department created what some are calling a “makey up” job for Zappone and why the position was never advertised or a panel never appointed.

Meanwhile, RTE, the government news agency is focussing on the trivial matter of “Merriongate” where Catherine Zappone held a pre-celebration party. According to the Irish Times, both Leo Varadkar of Fine Gael and Ivana Bacik of the Labour Party attended the Zappone celebration on 21st July 2021.
