ASTI rejects Department of Education’s decision to teach Leaving Certificate students in classrooms calling for remote learning

The Department of Education have been dealt a blow as one of the country’s leading Team union has rejected proposals calling for Leaving Certificate students being thought at school from next week.

In an announcement this evening the Association of Secondary Schools Teachers Ireland said that they have a guided its staff not to follow Department of Education guidelines and instructed teachers not to return to the classroom.

The statement goes onto say that the Association wasn’t consulted by the Department of Education about the proposals which have raised a number of concerns.

The ASTI say they haven’t been given assurances that schools are safe for students given the current surge in Covid-19 cases.

They added that although they will meet tonight, the association encourages remote learning from Monday 11th of January.
