Off the coast of Calais, at least three individuals have lost their lives while trying to enter England, reports Sky.
Seven victims needed intensive treatment, according to Sangatte Mayor Guy Allemand, who also confirmed the fatalities.
He said: “It never stops. It’s crossing after crossing, without any let-up,” reports Sky.
According to local media, the French humanitarian organisation Utopia 56 has taken in about 50 migrants, some of whom will be treated at Sangatte’s maritime station.
Firefighters were treating ten individuals suffering from acute hypothermia, according to BFM TV, reports Sky.
76 individuals have lost their lives trying to cross the Channel in tiny boats this year.
Following the initial notice on Sunday morning at around 6.15am, a massive rescue effort was launched, including a French Navy helicopter, reports Sky.
About 45 minutes later, rescue personnel retrieved the remains of two adults, a police source informed BFM TV.
It is believed that the boat encountered difficulties close to Bleriot-Plage, a public beach, reports Sky.
According to maritime officials, a number of individuals fell into the ocean while attempting to board the packed ship.
Pas-de-Calais local official Jacques Billant told AFP: “The number of people who wanted to get on board the small boat was most probably too much compared to the boat’s capacity. There was chaos and panic, as 58 people remained in the water and weren’t able to get onboard. The boat then headed towards the UK,” reports Sky.
