Baby found abandoned in a drain but alive

A newborn baby was found by passersby abandoned inside a drain near a Sydney motorway.

A group of cyclists heard the baby crying and managed to lift the drain’s lid. The baby was at the bottom of the 8-feet hole, wrapped in a hospital blanket. Police were called, and the child was rescued.

The baby is said to be malnourished, but otherwise unharmed.

The baby’s mother, a 30-year-old woman, was found after police checked hospital records and conducted door to door enquiries. She is now being questioned about the incident.

Police did not reveal how long the baby had been in the drain, but they did say the child was lucky to be alive. It had not rained in Sydney for a few days, so the drain was dry. Wet weather was forecast for today.
