The director-general of RTÉ, Kevin Bakhurst, expressed his gratitude for the improvement in licence fee payments while the broadcaster awaits emergency funding of up to €40 million from the government, reports Breaking News.
Mr Bakhurst was appointed in July 2021 after RTÉ became embroiled in a scandal involving undisclosed payments and commercial arrangements with former presenter Ryan Tubridy.
Due to the controversy, RTÉ had projected a €61 million drop in licence fee payments through 2023 and 2024, reports Breaking News.
While the government has provided €16 million in funding, additional financing has been withheld until RTÉ publishes its reform strategy, external reports on its financial governance, and more information on licence fee sales.
RTÉ operates on a dual-funding model, with approximately 55% of its income, or €200 million annually, generated by the obligatory licence fee, reports Breaking News.
