Barking Mad: Dog owners in America are paying $3,000 for “smart” dog flaps so they don’t have to get off the couch

There’s a new high tech invention to relieve pet owners of a staggering $3,000.

It’s a simple idea. A smart dog flap to save you getting up off your seat to let your dog out. Imagine not having to get up.

Called the MyQ Pet Portal, it can replace the standard car or dog flap on your door with a smart, sliding-door that connects to a collar sensor to know when to let your pet out automatically. It’s also fitted with 1080p cameras and connects to an app so you can check in on your furry friend whenever they request to enter or leave the house. It’s like a Ring video doorbell for your pet.

The MyQ Pet Portal connects to an app that lets you see your dog through remote cameras (MyQ Pet Portal) The portal is suitable for dogs between 10 and 90 pounds ( 4.5kg – 41kg) and contains safety sensors to make sure they don’t get trapped.

Prices start at $3,000 (around €4,000) and the invention has astonishingly won the Best Innovation Award in the Smart Home category at the Consumer Electronics Show 2021.

According to the Metro, a spokesperson for MyQPet says “It definitely provides a smarter way to parent and makes time apart easier for both dogs and their owners”.

Over 70 million American households owned pets by the end of 2020, and 80 percent of dog owners say they feel guilty leaving their canine companions alone so perhaps they will go for this new invention, but what about Irish people? Do you think Irish people would spend €4,000 instead of getting off the couch? Tell us what you think?
