Barnier blinks: EU offers Britain unilateral exit from customs Union

It appears as though the EU has finally capitulated and recognised that the United Kingdom is a force to be reckoned with. It’s been a case of who was going to blink first as just days are left before the UK are due to crash out of the European Union.

But alas it appears as though there has been a breakthrough, of sorts at least. Michel Barnier has in an effort to make the Brexit deal workable to the UK Parliament, the European Union will give the United Kingdom full unilateral rights to leave the customs union.

This is a major step forward in terms of stopping a “No Deal Brexit”, but Barnier did say that Britain would still need to honour its commitment and preserve a border free of controls from the north to the south in Ireland.

Make no mistake, this is a major breakthrough in terms of a hard border being imposed on the island of Ireland. Absolutely no one wants that to happen again, and now it’s up to the UK Parliament to agree on what Barnier has offered.
