Batman V Superman promises to be a battle of the titans

Batman Vs Superman It will be the ultimate face off this March when the Man of Steel takes on the Caped Crusader in the movie ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ that promises plenty of action as the two slug it out to see who rules the DC Universe.

In the movie, mankind faces a new threat as Batman (Ben Affleck) embarks on a personal vendetta against Superman (Henry Cavill). In the midst of this a new threat is created by Lex Luther and it’s up to Superman and Batman to set aside their difference, along with Wonder Woman to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis.

Ben Affleck has taken on the role of Batman and offers an older, more grizzled version of the dark character. The role was remoulded most recently by Christian Bale so it will be interesting to see what stamp Mr Affleck can put onto it. Henry Cavill returns for his second outing wearing the red cape and is joined once more by Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Jesse Eisenberg is Lex Luther who was  played by Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey in previous films. To me he seems miscast by firstly being too young to play the criminal mastermind and lacking that edge of menace you would expect.

Debates about who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman have always focused on the fact that Superman has superpowers while Batman relies on technology to give him an edge.  The trailer provides clues as to how he overcomes this, with Batman seen in a heavy, armoured suit that would give Ironman a complex.

In the trailer Lois Lane touches the S symbol on Superman’s chest and says: “This means something. It’s all some people have. It gives them hope.” In another scene, Affleck growls, “He (Superman) has the power to wipe out the whole human race. I am going to have to destroy him.”

If anything the film has too many characters. Beside the two titans, we have Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Michael Shannon as General Zod and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. Laurence Fishburne also returns as Daily Planet editor Perry White.

Other notables in the cast are Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Holly Hunter as Senator Finch. There are also rumours that Ezra Miller will appear as The Flash. Jeremy Irons is playing the butler Alfred.

2016 promises to be year fit to burst with superhero movies and the mash up of this film could pave the way for the future if it is a hit. It might lead to an oversaturation of the market however. What next? Sharknado Vs. Superman?
