As his government rushes to use all of the available funds to assist Kyiv in fending off Russia before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, US President Joe Biden announced Monday that the US will deliver roughly 2.5 billion dollars extra in weaponry to Ukraine, reports Breaking News.
The $1.25 billion presidential drawdown power included in the deal enables the military to remove current inventories from its shelves and expedites the delivery of weapons to the battlefield.
Additionally, it has longer-term weapons packages worth $1.22 billion that will be contracted under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, or USAI, reports Breaking News.
Mr. Biden promised to spend all of the remaining drawdown monies before he left office, stating that all longer-term USAI funds have already been used.
“I’ve directed my administration to continue surging as much assistance to Ukraine as quickly as possible,” Mr Biden said in a statement. Added: “At my direction, the United States will continue to work relentlessly to strengthen Ukraine’s position in this war over the remainder of my time in office,” reports Breaking News.
The increased assistance comes as Russia has attacked Ukraine’s power infrastructure in recent days, despite Ukraine’s claims that it intercepted a large number of the drones and missiles.
In the Kursk area on the Russian border, where Moscow has dispatched hundreds of North Korean troops to assist in reclaiming land that Ukraine has gained, Russian and Ukrainian forces are still engaged in a fierce conflict, reports Breaking News.
In order to provide Kyiv with the best bargaining position prior to Mr. Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the Biden administration is working to get weaponry into Ukraine.
Mr. Trump has lauded Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed negotiating a deal between Russia and Ukraine, reports Breaking News.
Many US and European governments fear that Mr. Trump would not give Ukraine all of the arms funds authorised by Congress and that his talk of a resolution might end in a bad bargain for Ukraine.
