Big change to method of offering accommodation to newly arrived asylum seekers

Since December 4th, 149 male asylum seekers who were initially not offered accommodation due to a shortage, have been offered spaces, reports RTE.

This was because they were either rough sleeping or considered at risk or extremely vulnerable. All 149 offers of accommodation made to new asylum seekers who were not initially offered a space have been given to male asylum seekers.

Previously, when the State stopped offering accommodation to new asylum seekers, it prioritized the allocation of available accommodation according to the date of arrival, reports RTE.

However, since December 4th, the Department of Integration has not made any offers on this basis.

Instead, accommodation has only been offered to asylum seekers referred by homeless organizations or other parties to the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS). This is because they were either rough sleeping or deemed vulnerable, reports RTE.
