Boy gets 6 months in jail for ramming garda car

A Dublin youth has been jailed for six months for endangering two policewomen in a police car that was hit by a stolen car in Ballyfermott last year, reports RTE.

The case of a 16-year-old who later jumped out on a high-powered electric motorbike while “goading” police officers ended today in Dublin Children’s Court.

Chief Justice Paul Kelly ordered the teenager, who will be held at the Obertown Children’s Detention Center, to be placed on supervised release for 12 months. He cannot be identified because he is a minor.

The court heard that in August the teenager had recently given detectives a chase and almost ran over a child who was riding on wheels.

However, after spending a week and a half in custody, he was released on bail with a warning that he must comply with reinstatement conditions, including a ban on driving any motor vehicle.

The court heard that one day in July the teenager was riding an electric motorbike at speeds of up to 80km/h followed by a Garda vehicle for ten to 15 minutes in south Dublin.

A Garda detective took a photo of the boy to “detract him from goading us to chase him”, reports RTE.

On another day in August, a teenager was found in the home of extended family a few hours after curfew.

Detective Chris Jones said the teenager went onto the sidewalk and nearly ran over a small child while riding his wheel.

Defence lawyer Lorraine Stephens said her client, who had no previous convictions and had never been in custody before, admitted he had breached his bail conditions, reports RTE.
